“We walk today to keep the world walking tomorrow”

“After 20 years of hard work, Rotary and its partners are on the brink of eradicating this tenacious disease, but a strong push is needed now to root it out once and for all. It is a window of opportunity of historic proportions.”

The San Clemente Sunrise Rotary Club is hosting this event to build Polio eradication awareness, along with raising funds for the Rotary Foundation Polio Fund. Rotary clubs here and around the world are determined to do whatever it takes to achieve a world free of the crippling disease polio. A major part of that effort is to raise $100 million to match a challenge grant now totaling $255 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Our walk will start at the San Clemente Community Center. Each walker will be asked to get sponsor donations totaling at least $100. We will walk the historic “T” of downtown and end back at the Community Center lawn. Our goal is at least 80 walkers from friends and family of Rotary. With only these 80 participants, $8,000 will be raised and combined with the current privately pledged matching contribution of $3,400. Our total local fundraising efforts will then be matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to ultimately achieve $23,000 in contributions to ending polio worldwide.

This means, at a cost of 60 cents each, our direct efforts will be able to vaccinate 38,333 people. Our Mayor Lori Donchak, with many other city officials, will be there to share the day and to proclaim the date as a San Clemente Polio Awareness day. Each participant will receive a specially designed T shirt by Bob Harlow and the great feeling of having helped to make an historic global difference.
