This morning's San Clemente Sunrise Rotary Club meeting was a little out of the ordinary. Newly installed president Jim Rutter took the podium to a crowd of Rotarians dressed in their pajamas.
You see, last year, when Jim R. retired, he showed up for his first meeting as a retired gentleman unshaven and wearing his PJs. To return the favor, the club decided it was appropriate to dress in like attire.
Jim R.'s first meeting, however, was a great success. We heard from Peggy Vance from the San Clemente Ocean Festival. She gave us a rundown of the events coming July 18-19th in the San Clemente Pier Bowl, including new events for children and adults. Peggy did remind the club that the Festival can always use volunteers, and if anyone is interested, they should email the Festival at volunteers@oceanfestival.org.
Past President Donald Clinebell then took the microphone and presented awards to his fearless group of tutors and mentors for the award winning 7th Inning Stretch program. Awards were given to Jim & Michele Rutter, Don Stenger and Lynn Lester. Some pictures follow below.
Jim R. then went on to show slides of his recent trip to Birmingham, England for the 2009 Rotary International Convention. Jim & Michele also spent some time in France following the convention. Though weary from their travels (having just returned), they were excited and filled with the Rotary spirit. For those who have not attended an RI Convention, you must make the trip, as it is one of the most inspiring events of a lifetime. Jim R. also read a bit from John Kenny's, RI's new President's speech. Click here for the text of his speech.
Our next meeting is July 14, 2009 at 7:15 AM at the Talega Golf Club. Our speaker will be Teri Snyder, discussing Reading by 9, and the Orange County Fair Book Drive - remember, July is Literacy Month in the Rotary World.
